Architecture for Humanity Chicago helps improve food access and eating habits in inner-city areas by buying up an old Chicago Transit Authority bus and retrofitting it into a single-aisle grocery store. Dubbed the Fresh Moves Mobile Produce Market, it travels through the Windy City’s “food deserts,” selling fresh produce and offering classes on cooking and nutrition.

Another lovely sundae from Lula’s Sweet Apothecary!
Banana walnut & peanut butter fudge ice cream, hot fudge, candied pecans, soy whip, and a cherry. Wow. Yes it was amazing and I ate every last bite, by myself.

I’ll be going there probably 3 to 4 times, in just a few weeks!! I am sooo psyhed!!
I had to work on Mother’s Day (and my mom was playing bowling to raise funds for the SLA, which is fantastic, but was a bit too far for me) so my sister, my mother and i went to dinner on Wednesday instead.
An old friend of mine, Mike Daponte, opened a restaurant with a fellow chef friend of his located on the plateau named Ice House (51 Roy E. corner of Ste-Dominique aka not too far from my favourite little bar/club to hang out at on Thursdays - Salon Officiel). It’s a very unique setting for a city like Montreal. TexMex influenced with a little crawfish party-style dining ambiance it’s certainly different from anything else in town, i assure you. They also make special freshly brewed spiked lemonade with maker’s mark and it’s fan-fucking-tastic, again i assure you.
Evidently with influences so strong as southern american foods it is not the most vegan friendly place in town BUT as i have come to realize you can pretty much go anywhere and have them mix you up something that’s not on the menu that will suit your needs. Fortunately enough i know the chef so i didn’t have to even beg or ponder about the possibilities. You order at the counter, they bring your food in buckets and dump it all on the center of the table over paper. Sounds gross right? Sounds like i shouldn’t have taken my mom there. But it’s far from odd or gross, the food makes is worth it AND it’s part of the concept so just get with it.
My sister had the ribs and my mom the fried chicken. Mike made me an incredible burrito and also informed me that they had recently stopped using chicken stock to refry their beans with (WIN for me, i had pressed that issue for all vegans and vegetarians in Montreal because i’m a bean activist!). Made with all fresh veggies, fresh cilantro, refried beans and some mild picante sauce this burrito was perfect! Not only that but the corn that was in it was straight from the cob… Corn on the cob owns everything and anything and i was so incredibly appreciative of that!
Both my sister and my mother the next day asked me what the name of the place was so they could tell all their friends about this weird place their tattooed vegan sister/daughter took em.

It’s not super cheap but it’s so incredibly worth it.
Tell them Val sent ya. Say hi to my friend Mike, flirt with the cute bartender and wink at the hot latino working the grill. Oh the girls are pretty gorgeous too. And i thought i saw Warrick Brown from CSI:LV, I SWEAR!
I have some incredible road trip stories with this kid, it’s amazing to see how far he’s come.
GO TO ICEHOUSE!!
Yeah i downloaded that app on my iphone, just like everyone else… Look how awesome it makes these already awesome blood oranges look!
I am not sure if you are aware how delicious blood oranges are… if you are, you know.
